Rationale for PE in Our School

PE develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can participate with increasing confidence in a range of competitive and non-competitive physical activities. PE promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills as well as promoting positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. Thus, we enable our children to make informed choices about the physical activities that are needed throughout their lives.”

“We aim to provide quality physical activity opportunities both within and outside curriculum time which: consider the needs and interests of all pupils; promote positive attitudes towards participation in physical activity; enable pupils to develop a full range of basic movement skills; increase pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the importance of physical activity; provide safe and stimulating areas in which children can play and be active.

Music and Performance is encouraged at Westlands Primary School, as it a fantastic way for children to express themselves and raise their self-esteem. Our weekly class music lessons are accessible to all students and support is given where needed. Our music lessons are made purposeful by ensuring that the children's learning is showcased in some way. Throughout the year, we hold music assemblies which include instrumental performances and singing. Some children also perform at Christmas time and our year sixes also have the opportunity to sing at the O2 Arena!

We encourage children to pursue and nurture their musical talents outside of the classroom too. Mrs Macmaster organises a musical performance group once a week for children to attend. As well as this, Mr Shepherd and Mrs Clifton lead an afterschool band where children are able to perform and try out new and exciting instruments! In addition to this, we have many children learning the piano, violin, clarinet, cornet and flute from our peripatetic tutors. If you are interested in your child trying out one of these instruments, please contact Mr Shepherd.
